DSL carrier Issue on Adsl2mue

Post by rockandroll » Tue Oct 26, 2010 8:34 am

Good morning,
I’m facing a strange issue with my modem linksys ADSL2MUE running 2.94 firmware.
I respected the good way of flashing it.
Before i used 2.91 version without worries (except that i forced ADSL_G.dmt)
It is configured as bridge cause i'm running a wrt54G to create ppoe connection.
So Every 10 min or less , dsl carrier is lost then it never comming up again. I need to switch off and Switch on.
A software reboot with web interface did not work ....
So i decided to change modulation and dsp driver version but same issue.
The only way for me to keep an internet connection is to use my old backup modem an alcatel speedtouch that is ony compatible ADSL_G.dmt & ADSL_G.lite so a litte bit slower...

Forcing this modulation on firmware 2.94 did not solve my issue and with adls2+ it's worst !!
Who can help me please….(Sorry for this big post !!)

When it’s OK are logs……

Re: DSL carrier Issue on Adsl2mue

I and others have had issues like this with this modem, one reason is that the power supply is marginal can need more than 5V 1A, using a better regulated 5V 2A can help a bit - but internally there is one small component which drops the 5V to 3.3V and gets very hot and probably not rated for over 1A.

It is likely to be a compatibility issue, I find when the modem and DSLAM negotiate a speed with healthy margin it works well:- My current stats are:-

I currently have these tweaks enabled - see RouterStatsLogger for brief explanation of DSL_ and margin features, I am not sure they make much difference

thanks for your comment i will try to change the power supply.
I saw also that you are not configured with fastpath but interleave could it be a carrier drop reason ?

Fragmentation level is "105" (out of 144 records). The threshold is "50".
First defragment the environment, and then try again.

Sorry to ask for such dummy question but how to defrag environnment ?!
should i use: /usr/local/bin/auto_defragenv.sh

I defragmented environnment from a telnet session and changed the power supply.
thx a lot i will see if that helps...

For me target margin and pathmode is controlled by the ISP. I have had fastpath in the past, but I think the system only allows it if the connection is stable and working at highest speed 6dB margin. Interleave is better for data error correction, at expense of latency (which shows up in gaming pings), but I am not sure it affects basic connection robustness.

i would like to say thanks for your support.
I changed power supply and defragmented environnment
the modem is up without worry since 1 hour now!!!
i must say that i have also changed the 8 chemical capacitor from router that is used to filter power cause they were all damaged,
they grown like a mushroom...

all is perfect and line is very stable
thanks again

Good to know - but if you did all at once what actually did the trick? I suspect the marginal power supply system was a reason Linksys never officially released ADSL2+ firmwares, other ADSL routers tend to be higher wattage. Electrolytic capacitors failing are the root cause of many power supply failures - I need to check mine - they can also fail by drying out due to heat without obvious 'bulging', but can then only really be diagnosed by removing and testing with capacitance/ESR meter.

Thanks for this power supply information. I tested again my previously unusable adsl2mue (best connection uptime was 10 seconds), which has been sleeping in the attic for 4 years, with a 6V/1A linear power supply: problems are gone 8) but the LD1117 linear regulator was quite hot. I could make a small heatsink for it with a strip of thick sheet copper tightened with the two screws in the middle of the circuit board. Another test with a 5V/12A switching power supply failed. Should I replace the capacitors too ? (they are as new as the modem, never been in use).

IIRC the Linksys supplied psu is a simple linear unregulated device which might drop to 5V at 1A, but starts out much higher unloaded, but a small chip dissipating a couple of watts is always going to run hot - more than 60 degC too hot to touch I recall. The chip may have some form of thermal overload protection - which will cause it to shutdown. You will find the story on this site how I replaced a failed surface mount one with a bigger replacement which can take a normal heatsink - this is still going, used for development - been flashed hundreds of times. Another user built an external circuit to deliver well regulated 3.3V - which I think is all that is used by the modem. If it works then I suggest use it till it doesn't - but at your own risk - don't blame us if it catches fires and burns your house down....
