Testing your connection

I noticed a project which provides a java/javascript tester for network connections. It seems to be aimed at US net neutrality type stuff, but most of the results are pretty general, and it provided some information which shed some light on the problem I have been having with my ADSL connection here...

The usual suspects

They show what the Intel marketing dept likes to see - Intel make the fastest processors. If you are interested in bangs per buck, there isn't much information there, but it is a handy quick reference for performance. I like power optimised processors as I've found they tend to last longer, but they...

Hmm

The core 2 7400 is much slower than the e6600, which is the sort of minimum power serious processor worth buying right now. For only a little more than your ebuyer link, you could (if you like building your own machines and don't want to pay the windows tax) get a system with far better performance ...

Phenom vs. Phenom II

Phenoms with 00 at the end are first generation, and probably not a good bet if you plan to thrash it in later life (i.e. get the most out of it for as long as possible). Phenoms with 50 at the end have the TLB bug fixed and a few other improvements, but the Phenom IIs are a better bet for the futur...

Try this

I think you should look at this thread: https://www.routertech.org/viewtopic.php?t=1974 WOL works as a broadcast packet, and only the PC whose MAC address is inside the packet is supposed to wake up. If you want to use a specific IP address, you're most likely to need to set that as static at both P...

Useful box

I've put the latest Netgear firmware on a DG834G-V3 and it supports Wireless Distribution System (WDS), so it can be used as a wireless repeater or just to make 4 ethernet ports available anywhere in the house. This is useful enough that I'm not going to bother playing with its firmware.

Another idea

You could try setting a static IP address for the MAC address of the PC you are trying to wake up. I think the MAC address needs to be in the ARP cache of the router if you are using port forward to deliver it, and a statically assigned IP (on both the router and the target PC) ought to achieve that...

Last time I used WOL

Last time I used WOL you sent an IP broadcast packet which included the repeated MAC address of the machine you wanted to start. In a corporate environment you don't want to start all the machines in one go for many reasons, so WOL allows you to start just the ones you want. If you're doing that rig...

Automatix is the standard post install script for all my codecs/dvd etc.
I just install the Ubuntu restricted extras package, which seems to get me DVD and video/audio codecs. Automatix was panned by Ubuntu developers for not doing things properly, but I can't see why its needed any more anyway.

An idea

The thing that immediately springs to mind that might timeout on the router is the DHCP lease, though why this would cause the problem I don't know. It would be easy to test though - bump the DHCP lease time to longer than it takes to stop WOL booting and try again, waiting until just before the lea...

Well,

Funnily enough I have got two, but I don't need two keyboards. I also have a 4 port wireless one which has a modem which worked in a limited way for an off night with the original Guru firmware, and stopped working with 2.4. Thats 3 altogether. The main router is now one of those (now even) cheaper ...

An option

Send me one of these

http://www.ebuyer.com/product/132131

and I'll send you a little used (it was my spare) ebuyer Guru single port non-wireless router with routertech 2.4 on it (a GART2-4112) with PSU but I don't think the USB and phone leads are still with it.

Try this at your own risk.

The DG834GT has a mini PCI network card inside it. This can be a bit of a problem compared to a soldered in wireless chip. To see if your wireless card is working, have a look at the configuration page where it shows you which channel the wifi is operating on. If this box is greyed out (should have ...

To be sure

U.FL is common on mini PCI wireless cards and would be more likely than MCX or MMCX.

Noooo

Put the soldering iron down - it looks like its a crimp on or push on connector to me. There may be another connector at the other end of the card too, but the prime candidate connector in your picture is on the right hand side of the card, near the bottom, with the (blurry) letters X/FX next to it....
