Windows XP WZC not working.

Post by studioeng » Thu Jan 24, 2008 11:35 am

Hi guys, it's been awhile :D

I have recently started to have a strange issue with my laptop; when I am using the Windows XP WZC (Wireless Zero Configuration), I cannot add or change the properties of any wireless networks.

When I either click Add or Properties nothing happens, no popup window nothing. I can only add networks if they appear in the 'Choose a wireless network' list; as I can double click them and then type the key if needed.

Has anyone else ever had or seen this issue?

I am using an Acer Aspire 5630 series laptop; Any ideas?

Yes Shoto it is a dump question ;P else I would get the WZC is currently disabled as another third party program is being used to configure the wireless connection. ;P

... And thank you :D

welcome back!

Have you recently followed some security advice to not be permanently logged in as administrator, maybe restricted user accounts have reduced options?

now where are those uptime stats... and the backdoor into your server...

Well SE you know I'm never afraid to ask dumb questions - sometimes I even know their dumb BEFORE I ask

Next one - have you tried deleting your wireless interface from Device manager and letting it be reddetected after a boot ? - make sure yoy tell device manager to show the "ghost" devices and delete any wireless ones there as well.

Yep, I've tried that; no joy.

I've just finished reinstalling XP; checked the wireless settings and it started working again. I did all the Windows Updates; checked again and it's stopped working.

So it appears to be a Windows Update which is breaking it. I think I'll reinstall XP again, leave the wireless drivers; do Windows Updates and then install the wireless card; see if that makes any difference.

It would appear that a Windows Update is breaking the WZC. I have installed the Intel Wireless PRO software and I can do everything I need to, instead of using the WZC.

Very weird though!
