I use a Safecom swart2-54125 with the "RouterTech TNETW1350A 2.4 RC1" firmware in this manner:
It is set up with a fixed IP; WPA enabled; listed MAC access only.

It is permanently plugged into the house LAN, but is only switched on when the 'station manager' wants to use her laptop.
(It is setup with my ISP details if it is ever needed to stand-in for the current modem/router.)
Hope this helps.
Now son, this is the safe way to... ohh?

Depends on the age of the router, Won't work on older routers that don't have the TNETW1350A wireless card.

hummmmm,

I tried it, and it worked fine, but it broke everyone elses connection, they seem to be trying to connect to the router too via their LAN connections.

any ideas on why this happens?

I think you'll also have to Disable DHCP on the 'Access Point' and you'll have to add the IP address of the device which actually connects to the internet as the 'Default Gateway'.

Both of these are accessed via 'Setup - LAN Configuration - Configure'.
Getting older and more senile by the minute !
