change the bootloader on a Zyxel router
change the bootloader on a Zyxel router
we have used zyxel adsl routers for many years, but as many of you will know they have their own ZyNOS firmware which is based on the Kadak AMX RTOS ( the same OS that Palm used up to ver 4 of their PalmOS )
the Prestige 66x range is the most popular with 2mb flash and 16mb ram, I recently came across this web page written by Kolja Waschk
http://www.ixo.de/info/zyxel_uclinux/
it would be nice to change the bootloader and try the Solwise SAR-600E RouterTech firmware instead, has anyone done that ?
the wiki implies yes - for many routers based on AR7

Re: change the bootloader on a Zyxel router
Your first ref seems to be about devices based on an ARM7 core, this isn't the same as AR7 which has MIPS core. I don't know any common routers that have 2MB flash and 16MB - which means you'd probably need a custom compiled bootloader to enable the additional ram. Are the Zyxel's also wireless? All our wireless firmwares need 4MB flash.
Re: change the bootloader on a Zyxel router
they have both ( wireless and non-wireless routers ) , and I have just twigged
the AR7 differences( ARM7 core or MIPS), thank you for pointing that out to me

Don't try it unless you have JTAG. And don't try it unless you have a custom bootloader that is configured for (a) your flash and ram configuration, and (b) your flash chip's manufacturer.

Re: change the bootloader on a Zyxel router
the P660HW-61 model has 16mb of Intel flash, at the bottom of this page someone brave enough did have a go at rewriting the BootBase bootloader

Are you sure its not 16 Mb (Mega-bit) = 2 MB (Mega Byte)?pcourtney wrote:the P660HW-61 model has 16mb of Intel flash
Re: change the bootloader on a Zyxel router
you are right - it is only 2MB of Intel flash ( Intel TE28F160 )
and 16MB RAM ( Winbond W981216DH-75 )
and 16MB RAM ( Winbond W981216DH-75 )

You can always try the non-wireless firmwares ...

Re: change the bootloader on a Zyxel router
yes, true, but maybe not worth it in the long run, everyone wants wifi these days
