RUC says old firmware for Huawei Quidway Wa1003a

Post by srini » Thu Jun 16, 2011 5:08 am

I am including the dump of RUC for my WA1003A ADSL router. I'm not sure if I can get an updated
firmware for this router from Huawei. Can I still use the RouterTech firmware ?, if so what version should
I use? Please help!

Thanks,
Srini

Re: RUC says old firmware for Huawei Quidway Wa1003a

Post by thechief » Thu Jun 16, 2011 12:42 pm

If you feel very brave and are prepared to take risks, then the most appropriate firmware would be "routertech-ar7wrd-adam2-firmware-4ports-20110502.zip".

It is unlikely that you would be able to upgrade from the router's web interface, and so you would need the PCTool. Furthermore, the mtd0 and mtd1 partitions are not correct for RouterTech v2.96, and you would need to set the correct values with the PCTool before upgrading. These are the correct values:
mtd0 0x90090000,0x903f0000
mtd1 0x90010090,0x90090000
Good luck. The RUC has warned you. If you still decide to proceed despite the warning, then better start praying ...

thechief thanks for the reply. Your post recommends routertech-ar7wrd-adam2-firmware-4ports-20110502.zip, but my router has 1 ethernet port, should'nt I be using routertech-ar7wrd-adam2-firmware-1port-20110502.zip ? Please confirm.

I don't have the original manufacturer firmware for the router from Huawei. Can I backup all the mtd partitions using cat/dd and restore my router ( from ADAM2 ) if routertech firmware does not work well for me? Is there a better way to completely back up the flash, to get something like a ROM dump?

# cat /dev/mtdblock/0 > /var/oldfilesys.img
# cat /dev/mtdblock/1 > /var/oldkernel.img
# cat /dev/mtdblock/2 > /var/Original_ADAM2.img
# cat /dev/mtdblock/3 > /var/mtd3.img
# cat /dev/mtdblock/4 > /var/mtd4.img

If your router has one ethernet port, then yes, you should be using the 1-port version.

Yes, this is the correct way to back up your current firmware. Whether you can restore it afterwards is another matter. You certainly cannot use cat/dd to restore the kernel or filesystem. You might be able to do it via ftp or the PCTool - but also, you might not be able to. I have never tried it with those kinds of image dumps, so my guess is as good as any other person's guess. Your best option is to get a full firmware image that is known to work (from your manufacturer or wherever else) before you try anything.

Re: RUC says old firmware for Huawei Quidway Wa1003a

Post by srini » Sat Jun 18, 2011 1:40 pm

Chief, thank you for all the help. I have successfully updated my Huawei Quidway WA1003A router to the awesome RouterTech v2.96 firmware. I love the IP QOS and DDNS support. I'm yet to configure DDNS. ADSL/Wifi and Ethernet port are working fine. I have never ever used the USB port, so I will not worry about it.

Everything seems to be working fine. Power, ADSL and Wifi LEDs are working fine with the generic LED conf. I did have hiccups using RRT v1.0.8 to update the firmware. It used to loose connection while
the firmware upload was at 31%.

To summarize, these were the steps that I followed. I'm sure it will be useful info for folks owning Huawei Quidway WA1003A
  • Executed RUC v1.4.1 took backup
  • Executed RRT v1.0.8 took backup of MTD3 and ENV
  • Backed up all /dev/mtdblock/* partitions using tftp/cat
  • Defragmented MTD3 and ENV using RRT
  • Reset default configuration of router (HUAWEI firmware)
  • Defragmented MTD3 and ENV using RRT
  • Calculated MTD using MTD calc v1.0.1, verified with MTD logs file for v2.96 routertech firmware (RouterTech_3.6.0D_20110502_2.96_AR7WRD_Adam2_1-Port_firmware.upgrade)
    • Updated MTD values for Routertech v2.96 firmware through RRT

      Original MTD values (HUAWEI firmware)
      mtd0 0x90091000,0x903f0000
      mtd1 0x90010090,0x90091000
      mtd2 0x90000000,0x90010000
      mtd3 0x903f0000,0x90400000
      mtd4 0x90010000,0x903f0000

      Updated MTD values (RouterTech)
      mtd0: 0x9008F000, 0x903F0000
      mtd1: 0x90010090, 0x9008F000
      mtd2: 0x90000000, 0x90010000
      mtd3: 0x903F0000, 0x90400000
      mtd4: 0x90010000, 0x903F0000
  • Single firmware update failed using RRT
  • Used PC tool v2.1 to update the firmware -- Success
  • Logged into router and reset to default config

Update:

I was able to revert back to my original Huawei firmware using the /dev/mtdblock/4 backup and the PC tool. I just was curious to
try this. DynDNS worked fine in RouterTech. I was also surprised to see led_conf for wa1003a in the RouterTech firmware. LED's now work as they used to with the original Huawei firmware.

I'm back to RouterTech firmware :-)

I have added my router output to the "Comprehensive compatibility list for RouterTech firmware" thread.

Read the docs about the Led configuration files.

Looks intresting, I have some experience flashing STBs, but not routers, As for Huwavie Quidway WA1003A, plenty of these routers are lying around idle all over India, some in service too, Is it possible to have some firmware for this model which can be straight away flashed using RRT or some other tools?
Can you provide a step by step guide please,

I have already done the cat/tftp part
would like to add a small note here to add is to upload the files from router to pc with tftp,
one command after telnet to the router :---
#ifconfig br0 512 " is a must so the mtu is set correctly, otherwise tftp shows an error tranferring file

This is how I was able to get the WA1003A LED's to work fine

1) Log into the router webUI, click System->RT Configurations
2) Add a check to "Choose LED file"
3) Key in wa1003a in the text box
4) Click "Save changes" button and reboot the router

Did you take a backup of the following before upgrading to RouterTech?
1) /dev/mtdblock/4 partition using cat/dd
2) Backup of MTD3 and ENV using RRT v1.0.8

If you did, then it's pretty easy to resurrect the router.
