How PPP packet travels from CPE to BRAS edge router ?

Post by hanamantagoud » Sun Nov 29, 2015 10:45 am

Hi ,

Once PPPoE/PPP LCP and NCP negotiations are done , CPE and BRAS know each others MAC addresses. When a data packet encapsulated in PPP/PPPoE is sent from CPE , it will have Source MAC (say SrcMAC1) and destination MAC of BRAS (say DstMAC1) . Packet is sent from CPE to DSLAM . Will DSLAM put its source MAC here ?

I do not know much in detail here - but the WAN MAC address of the modem does not seem to be that important for many connection types, probably because the link goes over the telephone lines using ATM encapsulation. There once was a problem with Linksys routers in Sweden with a connection type IP or Ethernet over ATM. The firmware default WAN MAC address was the same for all modems, leading to ISP conflicts unless the MAC address, stored in an nvram variable was changed. MAC addresses on true Ethernet ports must follow the IEEE standards, it seems that the WAN MAC in an ADSL modem is a virtual variable, not subject to the same rules.
