Router for 500mbps speeds? + Is a used router safe? + 3G?

Post by nitsan » Tue Jul 11, 2017 12:17 am

Hi everyone
I need to buy my first proper router. My needs:
- Fast wireless connection between a Macbook Pro Retina 13" 2015 to a QNAP ST-228 NAS. Ideally 500mbps.
- Connection to 3G/4G. I assume most normal routers can use a 3G dongle via the USB port?
- User friendly would be good.

I saw really good speed tests of the RT-AC87U. It looks great, but I read that it may be buggy or have issues?
Or should I get the AC68U? AC3200? Something else in a similar price range?

And is it safe to buy a used router? (assuming I do a full reset when I get it)

Thanks very much!

I do like Asus, personally would avoid the 87 as it seems an oddball with Quantenna chipset, seen quite a few problem reports. Not all models can be wall mounted so watch out for that if needed, 3g support is there, but patchy. You should have a concern about second hand re security - if you factory reset and upgrade firmware there shouldn't be anything left - but have personally only bought cheap for spares/repair, do check out warranty/reason for sale etc.

I wouldn't expect 500Mbps over wireless - hard even for 1G wired, look fore real world tests not marketing hype!

Do ask over on snbforums, I currently use Asuswrt-Merlin a 3rd party enhancement of stock Asus firmware. https://www.snbforums.com/forums/asuswrt-merlin.42/

Thanks very much. I've chosen the 67. It's from Amazon Warehouse Deals, usually it's a damaged box or returned items.
I saw real world tests showing over 500mbps, but I wasn't sure if that speed applies to sending files from a NAS to a laptop.
