Virgin poster!!!

Post by theboylard » Sun Dec 10, 2006 6:22 pm

Long time since I've been able to call myself one of those!!!

Anyways, looking for 1 x ADSL Modem/router and 2 x dsl routers.

Suggestions please for what is recommended currently.
I've looked for Safecom SWART2-54125 but can't find any?
I'll prolly get 2 of the SWBAR-5400 but I'd also like to get the adsl side at the same time - save transport costs etc.

Setting up 2 new connections, one with ntl, t'other is going with UKFSN.

Ta in advance,

do you need wireless if so you might want try the SWBRU-54128 for DSL and (if it's still available) the matching SWAMRU-54108 (not adsl2/2+ though) - I've been using both in a WDS bridged scenario for over a year without issues

Hi Jim,

thanks for coming back to me.

Wireless on the adsl side is not an essential, as connections will be via homeplug (which is the mutts' danglies compared to wireless) but knowing the man as I do, he would rather have it as a back up.
And it needs to be adsl2/2+ capable as he may be moving again to an area with choices on supplier.
I've had 3 SWAMRU-54108 fail on me over the past year at various customers, won't buy another one again, plus have no requirement for the print server which was always flaky anyway!

On the dsl side, one router is for me to replace my old b access point and a router and t'other is for a friend. No point hanging out for greater speeds than g offers as I don't have any adaptors that support faster than 54mbs, nor does my friend.

Thanks for the alternatives though.

Sorted.

Just got 2 SWBARR-5400 and 1 SWAMR-54125 for the grand sum of £90 delivered inc. the dreaded.

I'll get the 2.1 firmware when they arrive, for the SWAMR obviously.

Is there firmware for the SWBARR-5400?

Thanks again.

Sounds like good pricing :D - care to share the source ?

I reckon that you are stuck with the last Safecom F/W for SWBARR units :?

Just like to say welcome to RouterTech theboylard - I remember you from the ADSLTech days :)

The RT firmware will play nicely with your new SWAMR but unfortunately it is not currently available for the SWBARR units.

Morning all,

aye, that be true Kieran!!!
Nice to see you guys sharing the knowledge to a wider audience.
Shame about the SWBARR - is it ever likely to see an RT firmware?

Happy to Jim,

did a search of "the other place" and found these guys:
http://urlsnip.com/257275 but the navigation is awful, the help forums don't and because they are listing everything that you normally see from Rodion at qtds/computer component, I'm guessing that it's a friend of his - these guys are based in Wiltshire.

If they deliver on time then I'll be happy.
Delivery charges are strange though - 4.79 for 3-5 delivery or next day for 4.99!! I'll let you know tomorrow if they arrive!!

Thnaks for the site info - please do let us know how your order gets on - it's always good to get details of suppliers with reasonable prices - and even better if the customer service is o.k. as well

Hmmmm!

Just checked the state of play on the order - taken the money (on Monday!), no contact from them yet.
Paid for next day delivery, so ordered Sunday, should have been processed Monday and delivered Tuesday?

Log in and check the account managment section, apparantly I have 5 USB Skype phones for 45 squid on order, no sign of any routers!!!!

Not looking too good Houston :stern:

Anyone near Salisbury? I have a hammer handy? :whack:

www . etradehouse . com look heavily associated with (as in built by) Safecom (it looks a lot like their other websites), so unfortunately it's possible things will go pear-shaped.

I hope for the customers/your sake that things improve ;)

Doesn't sound too good, but then that can happen to many bigger online sites. ebuyer are generally good, but i have had problems in the past. When I bought my SWAMR from memory.

Anyway, having a bad write-up on here will not help them much. I bet many Safecom customers read this forum.

BTW, I feel I was mislead by your first post title. I was expecting to see you banned for posting inappropiate material...sadly no such material present

Good to have another convert from you know where. Our numbers are growing, but I'm surprised to see how many people still buy their equipment. On principle, I refuse to give them any more of my hard earned cash.

Neo - I agree, not-nice awful asp cart, poorly implemented and they have database errors!

Steve - apologies, with the forum's permission I'll post something festively inappropriate at the end?!!!

I do feel that Origo/Safecom opened a massive market - the larger players were not moving on price at all and features were limited.
Origo offered a reasonable product at a good price. Safecom built on that and built a better box but they didn't spend the money on the firmware very well - I had a few discussions with Sajjad about it whilst hassling Rodion for better pricing!!

As I've stepped my activities down very dramatically over the past year, I'm no longer current on the state of kit, so I don't really know what is an acceptable alternative?
Suggestions for future purchases?

Anyway, an update for you.

Used the contact form on the site and got a phone call from them about an hour later.
They apologised and said they had sent the goods on Monday. They now promised to send the order again on the understanding that if the missing bits turned up I would send them back - I'm not crooked and run my own various ventures so that is certainly not an issue.
I now have a tracking reference for ParcelFarce and it is indeed on route for delivery tomorrow.

I'll let you know more tomorrow.
As to the site problems with the orders and the skype phone bits - apparantly they have db issues which are being addressed apparantly!!

Still, at least they made the effort to respond and contact me with something positive, which is WAAAAAAAYYYYY more than many businesses would do.
Whirlpool being a case in point, but that's for another thread! Hopeless 'tards :curse:

And for Steve (and everyone else of course)...

Three men died on Christmas Eve and were met by Saint Peter at the
Pearly gates.

"In honour of this holy season," Saint Peter said, "you must each
possess something that symbolises Christmas to get into heaven."

The first man fumbled through his pockets and pulled out a lighter. He
flicked it on. It represents a candle, he said.

You may pass through the Pearly gates, said Saint Peter.

The second man reached into his pocket and pulled out a set of keys. He
shook them and said, "They're bells."

Saint Peter said you may pass through the pearly gates.

The third man started searching desperately through his pockets and
finally pulled out a pair of women's knickers.

St. Peter looked at the man with a raised eyebrow and asked, "And just
how do those symbolise Christmas?"

Drum roll......

The man replied, "They're Carols."
