Router Upgrade Check stuck on check.

Post by Ryujin_Ryuuzaki » Fri Aug 28, 2009 9:14 pm

Hello,

My old router Dlink DSL-G624T died on me after 3 years of abuse.
Since I was soo happy about the RouterTech firmware it's the first thing I want on my new router (Dlink DSL-2740B).

I downloaded and ran the latest version of RUC I could find (v1.3.4).
I did some quick basic setup on my new router allowing me acces to the internet, securing my Wifi along the way with WPA2-PSK.
That done I check if telnet is activated and it is.
Nothing else gets changed after that from the default shipping firmware that came with my router:
Board ID : 96358GW
Software Version : EU_DSL-2740B_3.10L.02V_2.61.A2pB023o.d20h
Bootloader (CFE) Version : 1.0.37-11.3
Wireless Driver Version : 4.150.10.15.cpe2.2

So I launch the RUC:
- put in my router IP (192.168.1.1)
- telnet username and login (admin x2)
- put the ethernet ports to 4
- Router description: Dlink DSL-2740B
- Check the box "Save RUC router details".
- Leave rest unchanged from default.
- Check my router

During the check it hangs at 10%
These are the things I tried:
- Change computer IP from dynamic to static.
- Uncheck all boxes before launching the check.
- Launching debug mode and trying router check in debug.
- Wait for 10 minutes or more each time.

All to no avail ...

This is the report of the RUC:
--- Check Started ---
--- Login prompt:login ---
--- Shell test ---
Script = 3
00:00:000 Running script
00:00:001 Opening connection

00:03:447 >
19:24:491 shell: not found
>
19:24:492 Closed connection.
Aborted by user.

Could someone shed me some light on what possibilities I have ?
I want to make sure I can put RT on it and also save the LED config.

Thank you,
Johan

You're out of luck. :( Your router has a Broadcom chipset (not AR7), and so is not supported by RT.

Hello thechief,

First off, thanks for your reply.
Second, I'm so sad I can't put the RT software on it.
Although this router is solid under heavy load and doesn't hang (I made him suffer all night), the Dlink supplied software doesn't have the same extensions of configurations and possibilities the RT software has ...

I do have some questions still although:
- Will there be any support for the Dlink DSl-2740B in the future ?
- Is there anything I can do to help RT team developping software from it ?
- How likely is the chance the firmware chance to RT might fail ?

I didn't thought RT wouldn't support it yet since it's one of the best selling Wireless N routers in Europe (don't know outside of Europe but I can imagine it to be popular as well).

Meanwhile guess I have no choice and make do with the Dlink software.
Lets hope RT will support it soon.

And if there's anything I can do to help, PM me or reply in this topic.

Greetings,
Johan

Unfortunately, the Broadcom chipset is very different from AR7 (a rough analogy would be PowerPC and x86). We would need a whole new set of source code, toolchains, test routers, and plenty of time. So I don't think that RT will be supporting Broadcom any time soon. Trying to install RT on that router would be like installing Windows Vista on a PowerPC machine without some virtualisation going on. It would not work.

As for what you could do to get RT onto Broadcom, I doubt there is much that you can do at the moment, as this is not a priority for us.

RUC has the same problems now with the latest version (1.4.0).
My guess: Still no support for this type of router?

Correct. Supporting a new chipset is a major undertaking, and not one to be undertaken lightly. Apart from that, to build a firmware for another chipset, one needs routers using that chipset for testing (i.e., someone has to buy or donate them).

Ok, maybe I donate mine when I get rid of it =).
Meanwhile, I would like to know what you recommend for RouterTech.
I am looking for this:
- ADSL PSTN.
- Wifi Dual band N with 3x external antenna's that can be replaced.
- 4x Gigabit Ethernet ports.
- If possible: 1x USB 2.0 port.
- Flash: 8Mo or more.
- Ram: 32Mo or more.
- CPU: I suppose Atheros or Ralink, since Broadcom isn't supported, frequency 400MHz or more.
(ddwrt *cough* has a list of routers and their hardware specs, which for obvious reasons I wont put a link here).
- Brand: Netgear, Linksys/Cisco, D-Link, Belkin (These I can get easier).

Your advise would be greatly appreciated !

Kind Regards,
Johan

You're out of luck. RouterTech only supports the AR7 chipset (and with 2mb/4mb flash and 8mb/16mb RAM).

@Johan
For those specs, why not get a simple cheap modem and separate Ethernet Router which supports 3rd party firmware - for example

http://www.dd-wrt.com/wiki/index.php/Li ... N#Overview

But I think the expensive Linksys E3000 doesn't have removable antennae

The Asus RT-N16 does nave 3 external detachable antennae, but is only single band N, but is generally cheaper and has more flash/ram

But note this is the bleeding edge of 3rd party firmware, both dd-wrt and tomato still beta with Linux 2.6 kernels, OpenWRT still having difficulty swallowing the Broadcom binary wireless drivers when I last checked - but there is progress with a kernel independent wrapper...

Note dd-wrt or Tomato do not support ADSL routers, there's no competition - were happy to share/ incorporate anyones GPL sourcecode and give extended enhanced life to products long since abandoned by their original manufacturer!

I don't like the separate modem because it might be trashing under the traffic.
Also, Having the modem separate from the router would complicate the configuration a lot.

This is the current setup:
- Wireless camera recording everything in real time, with 2 backups.
1 backup goes local and another backup goes to a remote computer (using DynDNS).
- Bandwidth selling and monitoring, 15Go for 20 euro each month.
Distance of clients: 10-50 meters, wireless connected.
- Heavy P2P traffic, with a NAS downloading and uploading day and night.
Programmed to throttle during the day and kick in at night and early morning.
- Network attached laser printer.
- Most of the time 2-10 computers running simultaneously on the Internet.
- A lot of video streaming, pod-casts, on-line radio.
- Also, router is setup to get remote control to: camera, computer, and the router itself.
- Running 2 Wireless networks, 1 open guest wireless for legacy connections (Nintendo NDS and Sony PSP), another WPA2-PSK secured for all clients supporting WPA2-PSK.
- One VOIP base with 2 headsets connected.

Current D-Link DSL-2740B:
- Flashed to latest firmware found on Polish Dlink ftp.
- Setup with 2 wireless networks (guest open and secure)
- DynDNS configured and actively running.
- Firewall and SPI disabled (free resources and reduce network delays).
- Replaced the 2dbi antenna's with good 5dbi ones (didn't use more to avoid noise from huge radius).
- QoS filtering used for the VOIP base and remote connections.
- A lot of port forwarding.
- Website filtering used.

My internet connection: ADSL 2+, 20Mbps down and 1Mbps up with unlimited traffic limit. (35 euro each month).

What I need:
- Either a CISCO SMB or better modem that hell expensive.
OR
- A modem for max 300 euro compatible with OpenWrt, RouterTech (preferred), dd-wrt, Tomato.
So I can:
- Optimise QoS filtering.
- Since most clients/devices are wireless connected, use the Dual Band to split the wireless load.
- Generally have better control over the network to optimize traffic.
- Get rid of the NAS slow network transfers because of the 100Mbps Ethernet ports and saturated wireless network...
Especially the NAS requests (file copies) really kill the network, as the NAS tries to transfer at full capacity and with the 100 Mbps Ethernet ports on the Dlink the transfer takes a long time to complete.

All the clients are already configured to reduce their network trashing for useless requests.
Examples: firefox and adblock, blocked ports, limited their P2P to max 200 open connections, 3 simultaneous downloads maximum, increased cache size for less page requests, shut down network services from Windows like those from WMP, IE8, and some network discovery stuffs.

And this is my home setup... I can't afford to buy business grade type equipment for it.
Whats the best ADSL router on the market that will run RouterTech?

Dear, dear - you do have a very complicated arrangement! I don't know whether you can set up two different wireless networks on one router with RouterTech - at least, I have never tried that before, and I doubt whether it could be done easily (wouldn't you need multiple SSIDs for that?). Instead of using this complicated setup, you might want to consider running SmoothWall (with squid).

How long is a piece of string? I think that any AR7 router with a PSP bootloader and a Marvell switch is as good as any other as far as RouterTech firmwares are concerned.
