Hi everybody,

I have D-Link DSL-G684T (Annex B). Tried to upgrade 2.9 --> 2.92 via web interface (single image). Run RUC, login in web browser, clicked "Update Gateway". Everything went without problems: "thermometer" reached 100%, web browser reloaded login page... and showed old 2.9 version.

I made 7 attempts varying: IE8/FF/Chrome, WinXP/Win7, resetting to defaults, waiting extra 10 minutes... but no luck. Can anyone comment this?

Thanks.

So, adam2_defragenv.sh from ssh ? Or something else?

Update: I don't have check_env or defrag script in /usr/local/bin/ - can you give me a clue how to defragment? Can it be done with memopt?

Thanks a million, thechief ! It helped. Moreover, visually, web UI works faster now. It's so good, that I joined the great RouterTech tribe. It owns the magic :D

Excuse me if this is in some obvious place, but I did look and just haven't found it.

Given that RT is already on a given router, is there ever an instance where you can't upgrade via the UI?

I've upgraded several Aztech DSL 600EU's from factory firmware, so I'm accustomed to going through the PCTool rigmarole. However, I'd never updated RT to RT before. Just now, I tried upgrading 2.90A to 2.92 via the UI, being sure to follow the instructions about being set to factory defaults, etc., and this may sound mad, but it goes through the 0 to 100% phase perfectly authentically in a couple minutes, and then goes to the login screen. I sit there patiently for another 5-7 minutes, and then login: to 2.90A.

It's a successful firmware upgrade that doesn't upgrade. I tried it twice with the same result. I'm using the one RUC mentioned:
RouterTech_3.6.0D_20100105_2.92_AR7RD-1Port_Adam2_firmware.upgrade.img

At first, I thought it was browser cache, but it wasn't. Even logging into it via Telnet showed the old version. It was definitely still there. Power cycling didn't help, either.

Does this model maybe always require PCTool? What about the DSL605EU?

I guess you're referring to me. I missed that part of the conversation above. So, it looks like it would be the answer, but is it the best answer? It uses the phrases "act of desperation" and "last resort." That, to me, makes it sound like PCTool is the better option one last time. I wonder.

BTW, is there a way to check your fragmentation level in 2.90A? check_env doesn't seem to exist yet in this version.

How frequently is defrag necessary in general? This is only the second build I've tried.

Yes.
rseiler wrote:BTW, is there a way to check your fragmentation level in 2.90A?
No. This is a new feature.
rseiler wrote:How frequently is defrag necessary in general?
The first time you do it, it would be a historic defrag (i.e., years of fragmentation removed). After that, about once every couple of months should be fine. Better still, run auto_defragenv.sh.

Understood, and thanks. I'll use the tool and then rely on auto_defragenv.sh after that.

I'm curious though, is the method that auto_defragenv.sh uses somehow less risky than the other earlier, manual methods? Defrag seems to have gone from something you only do as a last resort, to something done on a regularly basis automatically, albeit not by default. I haven't seen any recommendations against setting auto_defragenv.sh, so it sounds like something has fundamentally improved.

You take a risk anytime you write to the flash chip. However, the risk is less when it is done from within the firmware in a manner that is supported and documented.

The problem is fragmentation: firmware-faq/#fragmentation
(assuming you don't have a minix partition, etc., that you didn't first unmount).
