Dhcp offer with dhcp disabled on routertech

Post by faenil » Tue Mar 20, 2012 9:20 pm

Hi guys!

I'm using a routertech fw (don't remember the version atm) on a Roper ROADSL2P-WG

and it keeps sending DHCP OFFER messages while the DHCP is DISABLED in the corresponding setting screen!

How is it that possible? Is there anything I can check in router's config files to check who's sending those messages and why?

Thanks in advance

The date is wrong in the log, but I guess that's just the wrong setting in the router :)

Since there is no sign of udhcpd running - I don't think its the router making dhcp offers!

and what is it then? People are getting IPs from this router, its MAC was reported...

how is that possible?

If you don't know, then how is anyone else supposed to know?
faenil wrote:People are getting IPs from this router, its MAC was reported...
You've never heard of MAC spoofing?
faenil wrote:how is that possible?
Easily.

You might want to check the contents of these files:
/var/tmp/landhcps0.leases
/var/tmp/udhcpd.conf
/var/tmp/landhcps0.leases
Perhaps you'll get some clues.

It's not MAC spoofing, they can access the router's login page...

I'll try deleting what's in the lease files then, but I don't see how people got in there in the first place, if the router wasn't offering any ip. (we're more than 500 people in this building, and my router is linked to the main LAN via eth, just like many others)

if I had already known the problem, I wouldn't be asking here, thechief :D

Thanks for the help so far :)

Anyone can manually assign an IP in the correct range and get access. I have seen other router firmwares with something called 'arp-binding' which restricts access to pre-defined IP/MAC combinations - but even that is prone to MAC spoofing.

500 people? Have you thought about a PC firewall such as smoothwall?

Your router is connected to a LAN that everyone else is connected to? Seems to me that you have a major problem if you're all part of the same LAN, and the same IP range. I would imagine that the whatever is behind the LAN is what is dishing out the IP addresses via DHCP. Everyone would be able to access everyone else, unless there is a firewall in place. SmoothWall is one option. But if you are not afraid to get your hands dirty, then you can probably use iptables commands to isolate your router from other clients in the LAN. Also, you would be well advised to move the router's web configuration from port 80.

Finally, upgrade your firmware.

Post the output of the firmware's system diagnostics.

Ive tried it running with no firewall and still no joy.

Also tried it connected directly to the main PC as well as via the switch and neither worked.

When another PC is connected to the switch, the main PC with ICS/DHCP running on it will automatically assign it an IP to the new machine, right? Should it automatically assign the SC101 an IP or is there a way to do it manually?
