NB5PLUS4W Issues.

Post by magel282 » Mon Apr 01, 2013 12:20 am

Hello.

I have flashed the latest router tech firmware to my NB5. I had been working fine for a couple of months up until now.

Wireless no longer works and it looses connectivity via web interface and internet access. I cannot access the modem in any way until I reset the modem. Lights are still active on the modem though.

I have tried re-flashing the firmware but the problem persists. The strange thing though is I left it on overnight not connected to them phone line and it stayed accessible. Now from the log bellow I can clearly see that there is an issue with the wireless MAC address but have no idea how to fix it plus I don't believe this is causing the connectivity problems. Hope you can help.

The wireless MAC is not an issue, and what you have posted does not show any cause for a problem (apart from a fragmented environment). You should post diagnostics taken when the router is working the way you would normally use it.

Ok here's what I've done. Re-installed the stock firmware then re-flashed the Router tech one. I also de-fragmented the environment. I played some online gaming before and here is the diagnostics up until now. Wifi is working again.

Thanks.

There is nothing obvious that I can see. However, there are sometimes issues with pppoe. I am not sure that this is the problem - I would rather suspect something with the hardware - like overheating cpu/components, etc. Have you had a look inside the box to see that all the capacitors are okay, and is there enough ventilation where the router is located?

BTW: v2.96 is not the latest RouterTech firmware.

CAPACITORS
uploads/2009/07/Badcaps-tayeh-4.jpg&imgrefurl=http://www.mikerepairscomputers.com/blo ... g&dur=2446

http://hackaday.com/2012/01/17/tutorial ... apacitors/

if its more than 2 years old and has seen 24 X7 running its a capacitor issue , crack it open and post pics here

the pado packets are corrupt , they are sent by the ISP hardware , so either bad caps OR LINE problems (like interference in 1 to 3 MHZ range [home microwave / RF towers nearby telephone lines])

more about PADO
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Point-to- ... .28PADO.29

also the info you posted tells me that you are training in nomode then router switches to multimode
in router settings change to multimode <- it will shave off some seconds in starting the internet
also your mtu is set to 1500 try setting it to 1470

Thanks for the suggestions. I've taken some pictures for you to look at. All looks pretty good to me apart from some rust on the wifi chip.. Will the MTU setting cause lockups of the router? Also I'll flash 2.97 and see how things go.

what brand are the capacitors in last photo ? the others are taicon/ so they should be ok,
rust on wifi card ? could be an indicator
is it possible to remove the wifi card and see if the router runs properly ? overheated ar7 routers have trouble keeping pci clock speeds

capacitors look ok , but no way to be sure other than checking with esr meter or an el-cheepo multimeter set to highest ohms readout

if i was to bet on what caps are gone , i would bet its the ones near the ar7 chip
but i would just replace the ones(3) near the power jack and check and replace the other near ar7chip also brown + 2 black

I ended up flashing the 2.97 firmware and its been running fine. I have it in bridge mode and my DIR-655 handles the rest. It took a beating today with two of us playing BF3 on the net and didn't have any problems.

I'll report back if I have any new issues with it..
