Best router?

Post by cm0901 » Mon Nov 19, 2007 8:17 pm

Since my G604T seems to be near to death... I'd like to ask you what kind of router should I buy next. I need ADSL2+, 802.11G and UPnP. So... come on, share your suggestions!

So am I. :)

If you are looking for real cheapies however, have a look for the AWR-7200 here.

What is your budget? If you can afford one get a Draytek.

Same as Shotokan101 and thechief. Hahah. Apart from my failing power plug there's nothing else that went wrong with the router.

Some line stats might be helpful too. At the moment I have a really great line being only a couple of hundred metres from the exchange, and I have no problems using a Speedtouch 546v5, a SART2-4115, Solwise SAR600EW or a Netgear DG834GT. There is some anecdotal evidence that the Ti AR7 chipset used in the SART2 and SAR600EW are slightly better at longer lines than the Broadcom chipset in the Speedtouch and the Netgear, also some anecdotal evidence that the AR7 doesn’t get on with some DSLAM kit not yet seen proof of either. My old house was a long distance from the exchange and during low SNR periods the AR7 did perform better at my old house, sometimes the Speedtouch would sit there retraining for hours with no joy. My mother-in-law uses a DG834G, which is also AR7 based, I installed that router a couple of years ago and she has never asked me to sort it out for her since (she lives a couple of doors down from my old house so a similar long length line).

Is that AWR-7200 RT compatable? I'd seen evidence that one or more of the Pluscom routers were the same as the PTI-8505G,

Compare the pictures....

They may have the same case, but the published specs are different. If the specs of the AWR-7200 that are published on eTradehouse.com are correct, then it should be compatible with RT v2.3 (assuming that the ethernet switch is supported). The safer option (for RT compatibility) would be the SWAMR-54125 on eTradehouse.com - again, assuming that the published specs are concerned. And, Pluscom might not be a different company from Safecom.
