Can't access internet via browser....

Post by Shotokan101 » Mon Aug 11, 2008 11:45 pm

Hi,

I've been "repairing" a corrupted laptop XP Home installation and got it mostly sorted now.

Main problem at the moment is that i cannot access he internet via web browser IE6 or IE7 - everything seems o.k. fro dos - ping works name resolution works - telnet access to router works BUT http via browser just sits forever and never comes back.....

Any ideas ?

Are you running an old-ish copy of ZoneAlarm by any chance?

Nope - no firewall at all yet :)

"web updates2 for spybot etc. all seem to work - just "straight" browser access that's failing....

...I've checked the "obvious" internet settings such as "dial up" and LAN connections and proxy etc. but can't see anything obviously wrong....

Have you tried slinging a copy of firefox on? Other than removing I.E. as a windows option under control panel and reinstalling then upgrading it, can't think of much else other than maybe sticking Linux on the thing :P

Have you managed to completely remove it as a windows option uncer control panel - add or remove new progs - add/remove windows components, then reinstall it?
