Okay here is a weird problem.
I have a Windows XP Pro client that would not connect to a network share on my server (also Windows XP Pro). I could map it as a drive, and the drive would show a list of folders in the top level of the share, but attempting to open any of them would crash Windows Explorer.
I tried changing settings for days on end and eventually figured I would replace the server with a dedicated NAS box, so I bought the Synology DS410. And guess what? Same problem. This is weird, because my Ubuntu PC, and a Vista laptop, both use the share flawlessly (as they did on the original server).
And in the problem system, I have now tried two different network cards (the onboard and an addon card) and I have even gone as far as installing a second copy of Windows XP on the machine (it now dual boots between two copies). And neither copy of Windows will connect to the share properly, with either network card.
All systems are on the same subnet. The NAS (and the server that was it's predecessor) used static IPs, which I tried changing. And I have tried assigning the client various static IPs. Both client and NAS are on the same Windows "workgroup".
Both network cards work, because I can connect to the internet, and the router. Another weird problem, I cannot connect the the NAS's web interface. If I type in either it's IP address or it's hostname I just get "waiting for [IP address]" or "waiting for [Hostname]" and it never loads. It does display the title in the browser's title bar, e.g. "Synology DiskStation" but apart from that I get a blank screen. Obviously I can access it no problems at all from my Linux machine.
I have tried clearing the DNS cache, restarting the router, various different network cables. It's completely nuts. Trying two different network cards ruled out hardware, but trying two different OS installs ruled out software.
And the other weird thing, the client used to be able to access the server fine, and then one day, without changing anything, it developed this problem. And this problem has persisted even though the server has now been replaced by a NAS.
I can't get my head round it. It seems like I have tried changing everything and nothing works. What should I do?
Windows network shares, not working!
Re: Windows network shares, not working!
To add insult to injury.... booting Ubuntu live onto the system allows it to connect to the share fine. So it's clearly a problem with Windows XP.... one with no obvious cause and no obvious solution. But I need to fix it.

Had a similar problem years ago with XP. It was caused by an explorer extension. After removal it worked OK.mr bean wrote:To add insult to injury.... booting Ubuntu live onto the system allows it to connect to the share fine. Re: Windows network shares, not working!
That's a nice suggestion, but sadly I'm not aware of anything having been installed around the time it broke.
It isn't my computer... but I did set it up for the user so that they don't have an admin account by default. Hopefully they couldn't have installed anything too dodgy but you never know. I don't seem to have noticed any additions though.

Did it brake at a special time? Without installing or updating software?mr bean wrote:That's a nice suggestion, but sadly I'm not aware of anything having been installed around the time it broke.

Maybe it is this: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/918165
But I think that is not the right forum to solve this issue.
