serial console cable

Quick question about the above.
the laptop i'm using has a serial port can i use that to connect to my router?

Yes - if you have an appropriate serial console cable and the router has serial pins on its system board.

Never connect any serial port (PC or USB) direct to the router as the voltage levels are different.
Standard RS232 serial uses voltages upto +/- 12V.
The router serial port runs at 3.3v.
