i got a new job ^_^

Post by gazzer » Sat Jul 22, 2006 11:52 am

"(temporary) network support assistant" lol. basically i get about £250 a week for getting new computers at the town hall that have a preinstalled image, taking off the bits that each dept. doesn't need and then putting it on the network and taking away the old one. basically i'm a rentatech, except i don't really know much about networking anyway... most complex network i've ever worked on was the home wireless network, totalling 1 desktop and 2 laptops haha. i might be going into the actual tech threads on here more often as of monday morning :P

Congrats. Get another 10 years experience and you could earn that in a day.

Us IT contractors are hard working, concientious workers who earn every penny they get paid

We have more incentive. If we don't pull our weight, the contract doesn't get renewed (plus we can be given notice for no reason and have no comeback).

Although the remark was a bit TiC

Sounds like you should get The Chief to have a look at the wording of your Contracts

(Another TiC remark - I know exactly what you are referring to :) )

Is that a couple of hours until you start or 2 hours to commute to the job? Just given up commuting that sort of distance, wears you down after a couple of years :?

A few hours till he starts; he started 9am this morning afaik.

As for commuting, I agree. Before I moved to Leeds I commuted for 4 months, and that was enough. Created a 1h 30m journey each way including walking time.

haha brilliant..!

it wasnt so bad actually - had to change the domain of all the new boxes, and add dns and wins thingies to it, change some permissions. the hardest bit was getting their old computer actually swapped with the new one, because of the fact we had to make sure that they hadnt saved anything somewhere that copying their profile wouldn't pick up, ie on the C drive for example. also, some of the computers are so old (10 years in some cases, there were NT boxes..!) that this guys palmtop apparently didn't have XP drivers as it was so out of date (although a quick google for palm m515 XP drivers gave me them on the first page of the results...)

so yeah basically its not that hard, just very time consuming - although i do have my own desk of sorts (no personal workstation though lol) so for a first day it was pretty good!
