Router interference

Talk about anything you like here: as long as it's technical, doesn't fit into the other categories and is within the rules. Questions and discussions about operating systems, programming, websites, hosting, ADSL etc. are particularly welcome here.

Router interference

Post by hockeybuff » Tue Jun 07, 2011 1:08 am

Is there any scientific merit to the notion that routers should not be placed too near the computer or other electronic RF signaling devices, e.g. TV receivers? Efforts to install an inexpensive Cisco and Belkin router have failed, despite countless hours of tech support by both companies. At the time, the interference question was never raised.

Thanks.

Under international EMC (Electromagnetic compatibility) specifications devices must not transmit excessive RF nor be unduly sensitive to other devices, but clearly there are potential issues. There are many devices sharing the same 2.4GHz wireless b/g range, cordless phones, microwave ovens, video senders, radio control toys - which can cause problems. Wireless N (and its many proprietary draft forms) when operating in the 2.4GHz range can stomp all over adjacent channels being used by older devices, apparently the 5GHz range is clearer at the moment - until more dual-band routers and adapters get affordable...
