Firefox - stopped remembering its size and position ......

Talk about anything you like here: as long as it's technical, doesn't fit into the other categories and is within the rules. Questions and discussions about operating systems, programming, websites, hosting, ADSL etc. are particularly welcome here.

Firefox - stopped remembering its size and position ......

Post by Shotokan101 » Tue Aug 08, 2006 8:18 pm

Hi - as the title says my Firefox installation now no longer seems to remember the size and position of it's window when last closed.

Any ideas ? :?

i hate this, especially when the window is one of those that doesn't let you resize it and doesn't have scroll bars so you can't see half the screen! let me know when you find the answer...!

So is that it then ? I can't realy believe that Firefox must allways start up at a fixed size and position onscreen..... :?

Try deleting the preferences files for it; any weird settings should be scrubbed along with it, although remember to keep bookmarks.html and other such files to be sure of keeping plugins and links that you will still want to use.

Any pointers as to which files are "safe" to delete ? - my "prefs" folder has 4 .js files - none of which seem to be bookmark related..... :?

On windows it will be in your usernames folder in documents and settings, and then app data -> mozilla -> firefox and then there is a whole load of stuff in there. Back it up obv, and then start ff again with the prefs folder deleted. New instances of everything will be created with default values and then you can substitute back your bookmarks/plugins etc. as required.

Can't promise this will solve your problem, but it never helps to try this one when something isn't quite right with an application.

....Hmmmm no prefs stuff there :? just a plugins reg file and a profiles.ini with this content :-

Code: Select all

[General]
StartWithLastProfile=1

[Profile0]
Name=default
IsRelative=1
Path=Profiles/aywtzg39.default
and a profiles folder with the above named file in it...... :?

hold that thought - the file isn't actually a file when I clicked on it it opened as a folder and now shows correctly as a folder with lots of likely goodies in it :D

Wasn't that obvious - the File/Folder Icon was originally similar to the "javascript" icon but after I opened the file/folder it displayed the files and then once I returned to the previous folder level it was correctly displayed as a folder..... :? :shock:
