Android tablet (Teclast A15)

Talk about anything you like here: as long as it's technical, doesn't fit into the other categories and is within the rules. Questions and discussions about operating systems, programming, websites, hosting, ADSL etc. are particularly welcome here.

Android tablet (Teclast A15)

Post by thechief » Tue Apr 10, 2012 3:34 pm

Ok guys, I got myself an Android tablet - a 9" Chinese tablet called "Teclast A15" (£160 on Ebay). My primary attraction to this particular tablet was its 1280*800 (720p) screen resolution, which I have found excellent. The tablet itself is quite nippy, and I have not found any issues with speed.

Other details:
CPU: 1.0ghz single core Rockchip RK2918 Cortex A8
GPU: Vivante GC800
OS: Android "Gingerbread" 2.3.1, kernel version 2.6.32.27 (some are being sold with ICS 4.0.x - but I specifically went for a Gingerbread version)
RAM: 1GB DDR3
Flash: 8GB Nandflash (can also take up to 32GB MicroSD card)
Display: 9.0 inch Capacitive 5 points Multitouch Screen, 1280*800, 16:10
Camera: 0.3 MP front camera
Wireless LAN: 802.11b/g/n
External ports/sockets: MicroUSB (OTG support), MicroSD, headphones, power

Notes:
The tablet has no HDMI port, and no back camera. Also, I changed the default launcher to LauncherPro, which is far better.

Benchmarks:
I have run the tablet through a series of Android benchmark programs (whatever the value of benchmarks). The results are below. Anyone interpreting these benchmarks should note that this tablet is running at screen resolution of 1280*800.

Good luck getting the GPL source-code!

Did you buy the spare battery?

I am not yet brave enough to do any firmware tinkering. So I am resisting all temptations to look into GPL sources or into upgrading the firmware. There are ICS GPL sources for the RK2918/Vivante GC800 platform (there are many tablets with the same hardware - including the Cube U9GT2 and Onda Vi40, although they are configured for 1024*768 instead of 1280*800). I am using the tablet for serious work, and so can't take risks with it (not until I have a backup).

No. Perhaps I should?

I assume its like the Apple products - you can't change the battery! You can get external battery packs for the IPhone that are are same size as the phone. And its too expensive to risk bricking isn't it!

I suspect that changing the battery would be possible with these Chinese clones - but I would only know that by opening up the case (which I wouldn't do until the warranty runs out in a year's time). Hope the battery lasts until then! Fortunately, I bought it from a UK seller.
