broken screen/res workaround possible?

Talk about anything you like here: as long as it's technical, doesn't fit into the other categories and is within the rules. Questions and discussions about operating systems, programming, websites, hosting, ADSL etc. are particularly welcome here.

broken screen/res workaround possible?

Post by gazzer » Mon Jun 16, 2008 10:58 am

Ok, my friend's laptop has a broken screen; the case got trodden on and now the typical black swirly stuff appears at the top left like this:

Now, I know when you use a lower resolution on a laptop, it only uses the part of the screen that represents that resolution; say the screen has max res of 1024x768, and you used 800x600, it would look like this:

Is there a way to shift this "window" across so that the screen is displayed in the unbroken part of the screen like this:

Weird request I know, but she can't afford a new screen.

On my laptop 800x600 takes the full screen like you would expect it to do on a desktop.

I've not seen an 'offset' type option on laptops, only on a desktop monitor but I would assume it's a function of whatever the graphics driver can do.

Yeah, there are options to stretch the res to full screen, or just leave it in the center in a black bordered window, but nothing to actually move the display across to the right.

Guess she'll have to make do..!

Look on eBay for a spares/repairs machine with a good LCD. Normally pretty easy to replace.

Too new for eBay spares yet, you could try emailing the eBay seller http://stores.ebay.co.uk/LAPTOPSCREEN1-NEW-SCREENS-ONLY they sell new screens, they might be able to tell you if the screen is used in another model and which screen to get? Generally looks like they'll send a screen for about £115 but then you'll have to fit it into the plastic rather than the simpler task of fitting a pulled screen. I don't suppose the machine is under warranty still?
