Hopefully I've found the right place on the internet to ask this. Please forgive my ignorance if I don't use the right technical terms, but do correct me as I'm trying to learn. I want a router for my RV and looking for suggestions on particular models that have the features I want.
I want to be able to connect my devices (Tivo, AVR, PC, smartphone, etc) to it. I want to get my signal from weak public/campground wifi's, which often require me to click 'accept'/etc. Additionally if no public wifi available, I may use my mobile phone as hotspot, and connect router to that. This should mean I never have to reconfigure my devices, only use some interface to the router to select which wifi to login to (and the wifi login page if applicable). Ideally it'll be similar to a mobile phone so it saves passwords for known networks, and somehow notifies me when I need to login (or re-login) to the wifi in a browser.
Ideally I can mount antenna on my roof for receiving the signal from the public wifi, as they are often very weak. I assume my wifi devices would be able to connect thru the roof to it, although if there was a second antenna or receiver for inside, that'd be better. Same concern for when I connect it to my phone hotspot, not sure if it'd connect thru the roof as those are pretty low powered. Plus it needs to be omnidirectional, as I don't usually know where exactly the source wifi signal is coming from and don't want to be adjusting the antenna ever.
It should have a lan jack (or two or four) so I can plugin my desktop computer and any other device that doesn't have wifi to it.
It should be able to login to my VPN (openvpn), ideally store the password and do it automatically by default, although it would be nice if I could configure one specific connection not to use the VPN - my phone hotspot, because I'm concerned that maintaining an open vpn connection would use mobile data even if I'm not doing anything (please correct me if I'm wrong) and I try to limit mobile data usage (hence why I want a wifi extender, to be able to use weak public wifi's that my devices directly have difficulty with. Plus don't have to keep re-configuring them since they'll always connect directly to router).
Hope that's clear, and appreciate your responses!

Or perhaps none that anyone knows of, or has had any experience with.Totoro wrote:186 views and no comments or suggestions. I guess nothing like this exists?

For now I just use my phone as the hotspot but I really want something more permanent, with an outdoor wifi antenna, and lan jacks. Anyone with any ideas would be appreciated, I'm still looking but don't know where to start.

Hello, if you can not find the necessary information from knowledgeable people, or nobody owns such information, then look on the Internet itself! Now there is a huge number of reviews, comparisons, and descriptions of everything from refrigerators to supersonic aircraft. For example the first review I caught in google https://www.bestadvisers.co.uk/best-wireless-routers I think if you look through several of these reviews, you can find what you are looking for. I had chosen by myself the components of my PC, and I must say, am not a specialist in the field of assembling and building computers. In the end, what prevents you from going to the store or chatting with a representative of some online hardware store, to have a consultation about router you need(I do not have any links to such markets, but I am sure you will find it easily). As on of possibilities, read the wiki on the topic of the latest routers. I understand that I did not give you what you were looking for, but at least a few ways to achieve your goal, I prompted.
